This is our most popular excursion, because:
- It is available for most of the year.
- The roads are well maintained.
- It is the main tourist route, with dedicated tourist stops.
Our excursion starts from the Center, and we drive East along Spirit Lake Highway (SR504) to Toutle, and then divert to the Harry Gardner Park. After the Park, we return to Spirit Lake Highway and continue to the Forest Learning Center, and then to Castle Lake Viewpoint. After this, we descend to the Hummocks Trail, where we do a 2½ mile hike. Then we continue to the Johnstone Ridge Observatory, where the excursion finishes.
We start at the Center at 9:30am, and conclude at the Johnstone Ridge Observatory at about 3:30pm. It will take an hour to return to the interstate.

Note: Please book ahead. Do not just turn up to one of the muster points, as we will have to cancel an excursion if there are insufficient booked in.
