We are delighted to be working with Landmark Events in the organization of this vacation. Please contact them at their website for details and bookings.
The week has been extended to four days, and will feature a choice of excursions to the West or the East side of the volcano.
Speakers are Paul Taylor, Dr. Keith Swenson, Pat Roy, and Dr. Bill Potter.
Registration at the Landmark Events website.
This is our regular South Side Excursion. There are two muster points:
- The Creation Center at 8:30am
- Cougar Rest Area at 10:00am. This rest area is on the right, as you enter Cougar (if driving from Woodland). There is a parking lot and restrooms.
The park authorities charge for use of roads in the park – $5 per vehicle, unless you display an inter-agency card. Fee can be paid at the Deli in Cougar (by the rest area), or using the envelope scheme at Lava Canyon.
Please let us know if you are joining us at Cougar. There is no cellphone reception there, so your guide will not be able to hear about late arrivals etc.
This excursion will be of particular interest to those, who have joined us for the Landmark Events vacation during this week.
This is our regular West Side Excursion. We begin at the Creation Center at 9:30am for a presentation. The excursion will end at the Johnstone Ridge Observatory at about 3:30pm.
The JRO makes a charge for entering their building, or using their trails, of $8 per adult (aged 16 or over). Inter-agency cards and Senior cards are accepted, to gain entry for the user and 3 additional adults. No charge for those under 16.
Come and join us on this scheduled excursion, before the Summer Season ends!
This is a new, experimental excursion. No official charge is being made, as it is possible we may have to abandon the trail before the end. You are, of course, welcome to give a donation if you wish.
The intention is as follows:
Meet at the Creation Center at 9:00am. Leave the Creation Center no later than 9:30am.
Drive straight to Johnstone Ridge Observatory, arriving about 10:30am (please note that the JRO make a charge for using their trails of $8 per adult, unless you have a National Park card, in which case the cardholder gets free entry for him/herself and up to three guests. I have such a card, so can get free entry for the first three adults who claim it!)
We will walk East along the Boundary Trail. After about 45 minutes, we should reach the new trail, which by-passers the Devil’s Corner. We will follow this trail until it joins Harry’s Trail, where there is supposed to be a very good view over Spirit Lake. This hike should take about 90 minutes one way; we then need to retrace our steps another 90 minute back. The whole hike will be about 3 hours, therefore – plus any time added for lunch.
Walking Boots are highly recommended for this hike, and probably a gallon of water, especially if the weather is hot and sunny.
If the weather is rainy, we may need to cancel, or adjust the hike.
